Just went through my 2 year review in Jan 2014. I had to get my family doctor to fill out a questionnaire from hell and my SW had to fill out part of it as well because of my pensioned conditions. When I called my area VAC rep, they said it was more to confirm that the TPI and supp conditions were still valid and that I should not have to do another assessment unless I requested it. If I get worse, I can ask for a reassessment as I am graded at the lowest level. It was nerve wracking to get the forms but once they were done, my VAC rep gave me the OK a few weeks after I submitted them. The longest part of the whole process was waiting to get an appointment with the doctor. The 2 yr thing is the standard review time frame.

Re-apply, you have earned the right too. My CM put in the PIA and PIA Sup and with the medical reports submitted by three specialists and by sitting down with my family doctor submitted the VAC questionnares.

I was stunned when I receive in the mail two letters both approving each application....with retro back dated a few months from the date of my Personal Medical Examination with a VAC Doctor. FYI, like a vast majority of the VAC clients that applied I was rated the lowest grade.

So keep plugging away, I have never accepted "not authorized" or "Denied" VAC letters and after a brief tantrum!!! will always counterattack to get the desired results.

Little update, sigh... my pia was not approved. Frankly, I almost agree with the decision ( i know... i'm nuts! ) if I can kinda, sort of, still drive, or be in a car at all...some of the time.
But it was my good CM that applied for me (?) it wasn't even my idea. I bear in mind that I can re-apply if my situation changes so that's a consolation.
I see my CM next week about other stuff so maybe I'll be enlightened.
However... if the majority, 80% of first app's for pia are always denied, THAT would tell me something different. It gets frustrating... I know my sit., my very
good doctor does, no matter if I analyse a pia policy doc. until the cows come home, if I've been on the dva's pa books since the 80's, or if I have newer med.
reports. PIA has criteria that needs to be met. Personnel in PEI ( didn't they have cutbacks too? ) look over everything and hopefully do not err or play dirty pool.
And to err is human. Ain't that the truth. Thoughts?

Trying to smell roses before I fertilize them... pinger.

Rock the Hill.

Hey Cosmo, thank you for posting your topic, and the replies are very helpful.  I put in my pia application only a month ago, Dove's got approved recently, and for all concerned here's a link to the pia policy document    http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/about-us/policy/document/1092#anchor39397
I couldn't find any review in it that you asked about. I'm assuming the 2 year review your CM mentioned to you is for tpi as that is in a tpi policy document. Like you, I do not trust bureaucrats either. pinger.

Thanks guys - I am fully declared TPI also and my CM told me her review in two years will be pretty simple as the policy dictate it. Now I feel less anxious about it -- with my mental issue I have difficulties trusting bureaucrats. Thanks guys for the advise and response. have a great day. Cosmo

Cosmo, I think that the Government will always give themselves an out, when creating such legislation, even if they never use it. Since in order be approved for PIA, it has already been proven that the qualifying condition is "permanent". I've been getting PIA and the PIA Supp for almost 2 years now, and I haven't heard anything about a review of my file, even after speaking with my CM last week. The only thing that might be reviewed, is the ability to work, for continued payment of the PIA supp. But if you have been declared TPI, that should never be an issue.

Permanent Imparment Allowance (PIA) and supplement - Question to you guys Empty Permanent Imparment Allowance (PIA) and supplement - Question to you guys

Post by cosmo12 Wed 26 Mar 2014, 20:52

Good day all;

I need your help. Just received entitlement for PIA and supplement and I have a big question. Got this and in the letter or either the policy it says that VAC do a review of your entitlement. I know the policy state:

[b]38.A Veteran who is in receipt of the PIA shall provide on request medical records, reports or any other information that is necessary to enable the Minister to assess continued eligibility for the PIA, the PIA supplement or the amount payable (i.e. Grade level).
39.The Minister may suspend the payment of the PIA and/or the PIA supplement to a Veteran who fails to submit requested information until such information or documentation is provided.
40.Before suspending the payment to a Veteran, the Minister shall provide the Veteran with written notification of the reasons for the suspension and the effective date of the suspension.
41.In cases where the PIA and/or PIA supplement are suspended, the payment shall resume when the requested information or documents have been received and the effective date will be the date from which the payment was suspended

Cancellation
42.The Minister may, for the purposes of determining whether a Veteran may continue to receive the PIA and/or the PIA supplement, require the Veteran to undergo a medical examination or assessment by a person specified by the Minister. If a Veteran fails without reasonable excuse to do so, the Minister may cancel the PIA and/or the supplement.
43.On cancelling the payment of the PIA and/or PIA supplement, the Minister shall provide the Veteran with written notification of the reasons for the cancellation, the effective date of the cancellation and their rights for review.
44.In cases where the PIA and/or supplement is cancelled, the payment shall be discontinued effective the date of the next payment. Where an allowance has been suspended, the cancellation will be effective from the date of the suspension

My question to you guys -- Does VAC do a review every year or what is the machanism. As you know guys the PIA and the supplement it is a lot of money monthly and I just want to know what to expect?

Thanks kindly

Cosmo12
