The army called it quits on my career for me and when I released I had no idea what benefits I qualified for.  Although I did have monthly VAC pensions in place for my feet and knees. Army doctor urged me to apply, otherwise I may have missed the April 1, 2006 deadline kicked in.

I stayed drunk for the first three years after my release,  but then my case manager suggested VocRehab.  I still drink, but only 2 days a week now.  Those two days are mine.

Anyways, I'm going off topic......
I hear you, I am drinking every day but not to the point where I can`t function, I wonder are there any AA groups strictly for military ?

And like you I was 53, going back to College, with mostly 19 yr olds. The nine months was a real challenge, at times I didn't think I could finish it. But I graduated, got a good job. But then this was where the monster arose again, and as you know our concentration and memory sucks. My indication I was fracked came when they asked me to leave what I was doing and sweep the floor.. That probably was one of the hardest days for me, when we have to admit, ok I'm fracked and can't do this.
  All this time I was seeing my pscy every couple of weeks. In conjunction with her, my CM, with another assessment, it was determined I could no longer work, and the TPI process began. As well as EELB.
  So we all take different rds old soldier. This was mine. If you think school will be to hard mentally, then your Rehab should consist of pscy and working on it. So in the end, I now do that trade as a hobby..lol

Thanks, that`s about where I stand.

As long as you have been deemed TPI, you will continue to get the ELB until age 65, and RISB after that. The fastest way to tell, is log onto your VAC My Account, and it will list your current benefits. EELB is the only benefit with an actual end date, which should be your 65th birthday. I've gone through the same situation. I've been on ELB for several years, and my wife is in the last few moths of a two year course, paid for by VAC.

bog6,

Not sure if I got your question right, if you were on rehab, and no longer could continue and was granted ELB, yes you would get it until age 65, even though your wife has been given the education assistance from your rehab.

If vocational rehabilitation is an option, VAC uses a 3rd party called CVVRS.
Canadian Vocational Rehabilitation Services is in BC but has contracts with agencies across the country. In many places CVVRS has agents with the March of Dimes.
The Vocational specialist will order psych-vocational and aptitude testing. They will also discuss your previous experience, strengths, weaknesses, barriers to employment and help you find a program that works and provides an opportunity for suitable gainful employment. The specialist will research the job market and together you will develop a plan. The plan will be sent to your case manager for review and clarification/ approval.
The specialist will facilitate everything with respect to your enrollment and making sure you have the tools, equipment and resources needed to complete your training.

VAC Rehab program - Page 2 Empty Re: VAC Rehab program

Post by bigrex Tue 21 Feb 2017, 07:19

They have counselors who will do a aptitude test, to see what types of things you are best suited for, based on your own likes and personal skills, along with the skills and training acquired in the military. You can specify a specific field, but it may not be approved, if they do not agree with it. Like they may not approve an Electrician, going to school to become a masseuse, if they are still physically capable of being an electrician.

But that being said, there is very little training that an Artillery soldier receives, that directly transfers to a civie career, so I doubt you will be curtailed in your choices, to any great degree.

Thanks for this but what about the rehab plan itself. i.e. If my goal was to get back into the work place does VAC have a generic questionaire to fill out or a GED type test to see where you are at academically.? The physical part can be taken care of by medical professionals, I`m just wondering about job opportunities, I just don`t know at this stage of my life what I would be good at? How can VAC help me there, there must be a limit to the type of work a veteran can suggest he`s like to delve into.

VAC Rehab program - Page 2 Empty What is a rehabilitation plan?

Post by Guest Tue 21 Feb 2017, 05:53

What is a rehabilitation plan?

Your rehabilitation plan is developed by you and your case manager. Your family is encouraged to take part in developing your plan.

To achieve a successful outcome, the plan will identify:

your goals;
the services and benefits you will need to reach your goals;
local service providers to help you achieve those goals; and
a timeframe to complete your plan.

How is that done?

Your VAC case manager will work with you and your family to help you identify your rehabilitation goals, taking into consideration your health problem. The ultimate goal for you and your case manager is the successful completion of your rehabilitation plan as this will best help you adjust to life at home, in your community or at work.

You and your case manager will build a plan to achieve your goals. The plan will outline the services you need to reach your goals (e.g. physiotherapy, pain management, addictions counseling, occupational therapy) and provide a timeframe for completing your plan.

During your participation in your rehabilitation plan, your case manager, health professionals and other professionals will help you improve your health to the fullest extent possible and pursue your vocational goals.

Your plan is complete when you have reached all of the identified goals, to the extent possible.

You are the key to your plan’s success!

A successful rehabilitation plan is the result of the partnership between you, your case manager and the health professionals working with you.

Throughout the lifetime of your plan, it is very important to communicate. Providing timely and complete information about yourself and any challenges you are facing is critical. Share this information whenever you meet with your case manager, the health professionals providing services to you, and anyone else involved in helping you reach your rehabilitation goals.

From start to finish, your VAC case manager will:

work closely with you and your family;
help identify information and services you may need;
coordinate between you, your health professionals, and other service providers;
respect your privacy and the confidentiality of your information;
help you develop support networks; and
monitor, evaluate and discuss your progress on a regular basis.

NOTE:

Plans are time limited – Your rehabilitation plan has a beginning and an end date.
Full Participation is expected - Failure to do so could affect the progress and continuation of your program.

VAC Rehab program - Page 2 Empty Re: VAC Rehab program

Rehabilitation related expenses: for the purpose of this policy, are the costs listed under paragraph 15(1)(b) and subsection 15(2) of the Canadian Forces Members and Veterans Re-establishment and Compensation Regulations (CFMVRCR) identified as transportation, accommodations, meals, travel outside the country, health needs/escort, and additional dependent care. These expenses may be incurred by the participant in accessing departmentally authorized rehabilitation or vocational assistance services, other than training related expenses

A maximum of $75 per day for additional dependent care, as per subclauses 15(1)(b)(i)(A)(iv) of the CFMVRCR, is an eligible expense where the following conditions apply:
the Rehabilitation/Vocational Assistance Program participant normally provides unpaid care to a minor child, disabled adult or elderly person on a regular basis;
the care is essential to ensure the personal safety or health of the individual for whom the care is provided or to maintain their activities of daily living;
the substitute care is required when the client or spouse is participating in the Program;
the participant has the responsibility for arranging for paid temporary substitute care;
the cost incurred is additional to the cost of any paid care that is already provided to the dependent. For example, the participant may already be paying for full day child care program and be able to participate in rehabilitation services while a child attends that program so that no additional costs are incurred.
Dependent care may be provided by friends, relatives or a professional provider as the circumstances require.

VAC Rehab program - Page 2 Empty Re: VAC Rehab program

Post by Teager Thu 31 Mar 2016, 22:23

Thanks Trooper. Was wondering if they give you a choice in the matter for voc rehab or try to say take these College courses and not University? Also is there a link to the benefits like child care and Internet fees covered while in Voc rehab? I remember reading it on VACs site but can't find it. Thanks for the help.
