The hiring of staff and reopening of offices is a baseline necessity however I want to hear more definitively from MVA's office on the issues Veterans face including homelessness, PIA and NVC reform.

The veterans affairs minister says the government will move quickly to solve problems facing former members of the Canadian Forces — everything from finding jobs to homelessness.

Kent Hehr says the Liberals made “political hay” out of the failings of the former Conservative government on veterans issues.

He says it’s therefore only right that his department take an aggressive approach to make sure veterans are treated with fairness and respect.

Hehr acknowledged in a lengthy speech in Calgary that there have been problems with homelessness among veterans and problems with moving them back to civilian life.

A report earlier this month found 2,250 former soldiers use shelters on a regular basis and many suffer from alcoholism, drug addiction and mental-health issues.

Hehr says he hopes hiring new staff and reopening regional offices will help alleviate problems
