Cannabis Strains

The two species of the Cannabis genus that are most commonly grown are Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa.
Strains are developed from these to intensify specific characteristics of the plant or to differentiate the strain for the purposes of marketing it more effectively as a drug. Strain names: Kush, White Widow, Diesel etc

Sativa (species)

Typically is a more energetic, cerebral high.
Sativa rarely reports pain blocking attributes.
People relate more determined thoughts
Creativity and Action is easier
Being social is still possible
It is Alerting in small dose Sedative in larger doses
Often used as a "Wake n' Bake"  for mornings

Note: Pure Sativa can induce paranoia attacks and irregular heart beats.

Indica (species)

Typically produces a full body sense of calm.
Indica is reported to have the best pain blocking qualities.
Less determined thoughts (what…?)
Creativity is increased but Action (carrying out the thought) is inhibited
More meditative than social (couch lock)
Sedative (in both large and small doses)
Night smoke (can put you to sleep)

Both:
Stimulates serotonin which acts in the central nervous system - responsible for mood, appetite.
Uplifting capabilities that may aid in depression and/or chronic fatigue syndrome.

Hybrid Cannabis Strains
Hybrids are created by breeding two strains of cannabis together, where one strain is, in some part, Indica and the other is, in some part, Sativa.

Hybrid Sativas (Satvia dominant)
Sativas made to fit special criteria such as exotic smells, tastes and the "up" high Sativas are known for.
Hybrid Sativas are used for their motivational properties, often without the paranoia associated with pure Sativa.
Sativa hybrids rarely have any pain blocking attributes and shouldn't be used as such.
Satvia hybrids can have anti-depression and appetite stimulation qualities, so can be used as medicine for this.

Hybrid Indica (Indica dominant)
In terms of medicinal value these are the best and most widely appreciated.
Works on pain, appetite, depression etc and benefits from Satvia to stay alert.
They tend to have many qualities that both grower and patient find to their liking
The majority of medical marijuana is hybrid Indica.

Cannabinoids

There are over 480 natural components found within the Cannabis plant, of which 66 have been classified as "cannabinoids;" chemicals unique to the plant. The most well known and researched of these, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), is the substance primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

The effects of THC are believed to be moderated by the influence of the other components of the plant, most particularly the cannabinoids.

The cannabinoids are separated into subclasses. The ones we are concerned about are:
Cannabidiols (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinols (THC)

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the at least 85 cannabinoids found in cannabis and the second only to THC when it comes to average volume. Recently, CBD has gained support for its use as a medical treatment as research has shown it effectively treats pain, inflammation, and anxiety without the psychoactive effects ( "stoned")
CBD has been connected to the anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, anti-nausea, anti-anxiety, and muscle relaxing functions of medical marijuana.

THC is an abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the most well-known and most abundantly available cannabinoid in marijuana plants. There is no lethal dose of the compound in its natural form.
THC is responsible for the “high” felt from cannabis. Research has connected it to the immune system regulating, anti- inflammatory, and pain relieving properties of medical marijuana.

1) The High
THC is probably best known for being the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. CBD, however, is non-psychoactive. In other words, CBD can’t get you high. While disappointing to recreational users, this unique feature of CBD is what makes it so appealing as a medicine.

2) Anxiety
THC is known to cause some people to feel anxious or paranoid. But CBD is believed to have the opposite effect. In fact, studies show that CBD works to counteract the anxiety caused by ingesting THC. A number of studies also suggest that CBD can reduce anxiety when administered on its own.

3) Anti-psychotic
In addition to being non-psychoactive, CBD seems to have antipsychotic properties. Researchers believe that CBD may protect marijuana users from getting too high by reducing the psychosis-like effects of THC. However, regulating the mind-altering activity of THC isn’t all that CBD is good for. On its own, CBD is being tested as an anti-psychotic medicine for people with schizophrenia.

4) Sleep
One of the most common uses of marijuana is as a sleep aid. THC is believed to be responsible for most of marijuana’s sleep-inducing effects. On the other hand, studies suggest CBD acts to promote wakefulness, making CBD a poor choice as a sleep medicine. The opposite effects of CBD and THC on sleep may explain why some strains of cannabis cause users to feel drowsy while others are known to boost energy.
