Give our volunteers a medal

Canada is a very odd nation when it comes to giving medals for those who serve and in the past medals for special assignments which Canadas military was engaged in. We have hundreds of thousands of Canadians who volunteer to serve, many in a short duration period and Canada does not recognize them for their service. This begs the question, Why?

We did have a CVSM, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, for those who signed up in World War 2 and then the medal was ceased, but no clear reason as to why.

A veteran by the name of Dave Palmer, during the past 10 years or so has almost begged the government of Canada, to bring back a medal for those who served with honour and at least be recognized for their services. Many served for a five year stint or less, some engaged in combat, receive medals for that role but not for volunteering.

We do have a CD, Canadian Forces Decoration, given for Good Conduct after 10 years and bars for serving longer periods which in many cases even those who served do not receive this award.

Many serving, many veterans, some legion members and veteran associations do not back the volunteer medal idea as they think the CD is good enough.

Our Governor General who never served a day in the military is allowed to wear the CD. He is head of the Canadian Armed forces.

I differ greatly. I have known many a good serving member who worked diligently, served with honour, deployed to combat areas, UN details, took their releases and no recognition from the government of Canada as a volunteer. We had to beg the Government of Canada to strike a medal given to members who served in United Nations deployment.

Our MP Steve Fuhr, is a retired Major, a Veteran and wears i think two medals for deployment in a combat area. Yet is silent on the Volunteer medal.

We gave 10.5 million dollars to a terrorist, Canadian born convicted terrorist, yet we can’t strike a medal for those who volunteer to serve no matter where they are deployed.

Thank you, we need input from everyone to write our MP and the Government of Canada asking to give our volunteers a medal. After all the GG brought about a civilian volunteer medal.
