For Those Accessing CRA Website For Tax Purposes
On CBC today.
The Canada Revenue Agency has shut down the public access portion of its website due to the Heartbleed Bug.
The Heartbleed Bug is a recently discovered vulnerability in a version of OpenSSL software code that is installed on two-thirds of the active websites on the internet.
Although OpenSSL is believed to be benign and comparatively safe and secure, the Heartbleed vulnerability could allow a malicious user to read the memory of systems protected by the bug-afflicted code, compromising the secret keys used to encrypt the data.
"Essentially they'd get a second key to your house and can walk in whenever they want," technology analyst Carmi Levy told CBC News to describe the bug on Wednesday.
The tax agency announced the partial shutdown of its website in a note on the site Wednesday morning, but provided little detail, saying the move was done as a precaution.
"To protect the security of taxpayer information, we have temporarily shutdown public access to our electronic services. We are working to restore these services as soon as possible in a manner that ensures they are safe and secure," the website read.
However, the agency later told CBC News in an email that the shutdown is related to the Heartbleed Bug.
Minister of Revenue Kerry-Lynne Findlay's office says they are working to investigate "any impact to taxpayer information."
The agency tweeted days earlier that 1,763 online returns were being processed per minute.
More than 6.7 million Canadians have filed tax returns electronically as of March 24. That represents almost 84 per cent of returns

I would love to see the look on Minister Fantino's face if any of his counterparts asked him if their commitment to Veterans included fighting the three recent class actions over benefits in court, or the closing of VAC offices, leaving tens of thousands of Veterans, with little to no local support by staff with specialized training to deal with Veterans' needs.

Minister Fantino Highlights Canada’s Support for Veterans at Ministerial Summit
Employment opportunities
April 8, 2014 – West Point, New York – Veterans Affairs Canada
The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, joined Veterans Affairs ministers and secretaries from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States in West Point, New York, for the Ministerial Summit on Veterans’ Affairs.
The theme of this year’s summit is Improving the Physical, Psychological and Economic Well-Being of Service Members and Veterans from Military Service – A Holistic Approach. Participating officials discussed the importance of collaborative research in the areas of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), transition and employment initiatives, strategic communications, women’s health and memorial affairs. Participants emphasized the importance of continuing collaborative efforts through information exchanges and research so agencies can continue to provide insight into the complex issues that face our Veterans and their families.
While at the Summit, Minister Fantino delivered a presentation highlighting the Veterans Hiring Act, recent legislation from the Government of Canada which offers preferential hiring to releasing members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Quick Facts
· The recently tabled Veterans Hiring Act will help move Veterans to the front of the line when it comes to hiring qualified Canadians for federal public service jobs.
· VAC provides on-site services to releasing CAF members on or near 24 major CF bases and wings across Canada.
· VAC offers case management services to assist CAF members, Veterans, RCMP Veterans and their families who may be finding it difficult to navigate a transition or change in their lives.
· There are integrated personnel support centres on most bases and wings across the country, where releasing CAF members can learn more about VAC’s services and benefits.
· VAC is committed to helping Veterans find meaningful employment when they leave the military, through the Hire a Veteran initiative, its support to Helmets to Hardhats and new measures to make its vocational rehabilitation program more responsive and flexible for Veterans.
· The Ministerial Summit is an event held every 18-24 months and the objectives are to address challenges facing Veterans communities.
Quotes
“No government in modern Canadian history has made a greater financial commitment for Veterans’ services. Our record of leadership and support for Veterans is second to none. I valued the opportunity to share our success stories and to learn from my international counterparts.”
The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs

Veteran Committee appearance of VVI - my comment
Well;
First and foremost thank you to VVI for their powerful testamony at the committee yesterday. I am a severe disabled veteran closely watching the review as it outfolds and I have to be honest it is going nowhere. I do not know why they keep going when they have so many recommandations in front of them. BravoZulu to Mr. Chicoine yesterday to summit a motion to ask the government to move forward immediately on a number of issues as per example; Earning loss increase, better access to PIA and income after 65.
This coming thursday, Mr. Blais will be appearing - looking forward to it.
Today Minister Fantino is appearing before the senate committee at 12h00 with Madame Chaput
Thanks again and lets keep the fight!!!!

Hey BigRex,
Thank you for posting the sentiments of my mind bigrex (you too teentitan) esp. with that little... quote out of the today's press release for all to read here... http://news.gc.ca/web/article-en.do?nid=827339 . That kind of GOC aboutface is bamboozling to me, I believe Peter Stoffer even called it a significant shift. MAYBE... it's political friendly fire
No such levity but you never know, time will tell. pinger.

Re: Assorted Merged Stored Topics
Just to give some perspective on these 3 press releases today...they all focus around the Equitas lawsuit.
Don Sorochan, head lawyer that is doing this lawsuit pro-bono as well as the resources from Miller Thompson lawfirm, is about to embark on a full court press on the judge saying there is no "obligation" from the GoC to veterans.
Can anyone say "campaigning"? So with all due respect to my fellow CSAT members don't let a political party fool you. Get it in writing from Harper, Mulcair or Trudeau before believing them.

Re: Assorted Merged Stored Topics
Well I think that it is funny that on the same day that both the NDP and Liberals formally lambaste the Government and their position, as expressed by their lawyers, that Canada has no special obligation to the countries Veterans, that Mr Fanino holds his own press conference and says the following statement:
"“Some have called the work done by Veterans Affairs to be a duty, a responsibility, a commitment, a social contract or a sacred obligation. I believe it is all of those things."
So maybe the Minister had better have a word with the GoC lawyers who are representing his department. After all, what is the governments real position on Veterans, the one they use in front of a camera, or the one they claim while in front of a judge? Myself, if I was the judge, and heard that statement, I would dismiss the appeal, and force the government to stand behind their rhetoric. Or are the Tories, not only allowed to ignore promises made by past governments during political speeches, but their own promises as well?

Re: Assorted Merged Stored Topics
We need to find a way to get one collective voice that is loud enough that ALL policiticans will not only hear us, they will heed us.
Peter is the only one who has responded to the questions that I was asking of MY MP! Trudeau's office said they would get someone to respond to me, but that was over a wekk ago and my MP still has not responded.
We have such excellent speakers and writers that I am amazed that we cannot organize ourselves into one coherent voice for all.
The KISS principal needs to be applied but in such a way that we have XX,000's of voices being brought to bear by one or two representatives. That way when the time to vote nears and they see that there really exists this large group that can play an important role in the final outcome, they will pay us the homage that we are due.
My 2 cents.
