The PIA itself can be granted even if the Veteran is still working. The PIA supplement is paid when the Veteran forced to retire due to his health.

Is the PIA granted only if a member cannot work? Or can a member work and still receive it? Thanks in advance.

well the EIA rates range from $470.06 to $1,410.13 tax free . the PIA ranges from $584.66 to $1,753.97 taxed and its supplement is $1,074.93 taxed .

so one could be around 1,400.00 top end tax free and the others around 2800 top end taxed.

I guess it all depends on your tax situation and any supplement's or benefits you might recive that are taxable income sensitive .

im thinking in most cases the PIA and supplement would be more beneficial but its hard to say.

Apply for the PIA, and PIAS, but if VAC deems that he should be getting the EIA, that is what they will approve.

If a veteran is disabled at 100% and they had never applied for either the EIA or the PIA, they have been paid under the old PA and under the NVC, then which for them would be the best to initially apply for?

Well, for one thing, you cannot choose which one to apply for, but for argument sake, let us say that you can. The EIA is tax free, but in order to qualify, you need to be getting paid at 100% PA pension. The PIA is taxable, but you do not have to be as severely injured to qualify. A Veteran could be only 40-50%, but if the disability requires significant assistance with ADL's , you can be approved. The PIAS, can be approved if you have already been approved for the PIA, AND your disability keeps you from being able to work.
