The Glengarry Highland Games is welcoming a Canadian hero as this year's guest of honour.

Jody Mitic, a 20-year Canadian Armed Forces veteran and sniper team leader who lost both legs in Afghanistan in 2007, will preside at the opening ceremonies on Saturday, July 30, at 12:30 p.m.

Mitic's name has become synonymous across Canada with a never-say-die attitude and triumph over incredible odds.

Mitic lost his legs when he stepped on a landmine on his third tour of duty overseas, but after only a few short months, he was up and walking again. Mitic made national headlines when he competed in the Achilles five kilometre run on two prosthetic legs. He also completed the Canada Army Run half marathon. Mitic's accomplishments were not only a personal milestone, but became a major event that helped inspire change in how the military views and handles injured veterans and their ability to be of service.

Mitic competed in the Amazing Race Canada's first season with his brother Cory in 2013, finishing in second place. He recently released a best-seller entitled "Unflinching: The Making of a Canadian Sniper," a chronicle of the honour and sacrifice of an ordinary Canadian fighting for his country and an inspirational memoir about living your dreams and never giving up.

Mitic is a much sought after motivational speaker and a respected advocate for wounded veterans, people with disabilities and amputees. He is the founder of the Never Quit Foundation, raising money and awareness for adaptive living for wounded soldiers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

He also sat on the board of directors of Won with One, an organization devoted to helping physically challenged athletes realize their dreams.

In October 2014, Mitic was elected as city councillor for Innes Ward representing nearly 40,000 constituents at Ottawa city hall. He currently lives in Chapel Hill South with his wife, Alannah, and their two daughters Aylah and Kierah.

Mitic joins such dignitaries as prime ministers, sports heroes and media personalities as guests of honour for the Highland Games.

"I look forward to welcoming Jody to our games," said Anne Stewart, games president. "His story of strength, courage and perseverance is an inspiration to us all. I salute this Canadian hero who has accomplished much and who will, no doubt, accomplish much more."
