K9 is right, once they approve a disability, even at zero, or especially at zero, it can only be increased. Worst case scenario is if the appeal to raise the percent fails, simply request a reassessment after the two years. Then during the medical, don't try to soldier through. If it hurts, say so. If it causes the slightest problem, let the doctor know. The worse your symptoms are, the higher the award, but it only works if you report them during the medical.

0 percent is a acknoledgment of pension and yes you are to receive the same for meds, had a friend who received a1/5 at 0 percent. He had is meds payed and went on appeal, and got more!

Ducked, I was not the one who was approved at 0%, but they do have 0% on the table of disabilities. Arthritis for example, they may approve a claim because there is medical evidence of you injuring a knee per say in Afghanistan and it develops into Arthritis. But for pensions or awards, there has to be reported symptoms from the OA, in order to assign a percentage. If someone diagnosed with OA, just based on X-rays, but has no pain or swelling and no loss in their range of motion, VAC could approve a 0% award. I've just never heard of it before because there had to have been some sort of indication of the disability before it was diagnosed. People don't just go to the doctor and have them say "oh BTW, we saw on x-rays that you have Arthritis!". There had to have been a reason they had the x-ray done, and it's usually because the symptoms have shown themselves.

Sparrow1 and only: What is this +1% -1% can they go that low? How long did your husband wait from the time he sent it in for review? It looks like grandfathering will protect what he gets in the future? I am told many are waiting over 20 weeks for reassessments.

bigrex: 26 weeks and then approved at 0% ? Are you at 100%? What does that mean approved at 0%?

It truly does baffle me Sparrow. The same thing happened to my father. he had a reassessment on his ankle. It was originally pensioned back in 92 when he released and this was the first reassessment, and they came back with the 1 percent increase, but no extra money. Personally I think conditions that were pensioned under the old table of disabilities should use the old tables for reassessments, since the criteria and pension rates can be completely different under the new tables. Even though the new ToD are more comprehensive, for the majority of cases, the payouts are equal to or more often reduced compared to old table.

bigrex, my husband had a reassessment for his back and shoulder from dva and he received his decision last week. The reassessment was initiated by my husband for those conditions which had not been reassessed since the original decision 10 years ago. Of course his conditions have worsed but dva said the following. The were pleased to advise that his pension will increase by 1% for his shoulder thus payment stays the same and the back reassessment has been reduced by 1% ~ furthermore because it was the old charter he is grandfathered therefore it would not be reduced by the 1% financially. We were dumbfounded to say the least. How can you respond to something like that.

Apparently they sent one of my claims for an additional medical review on March 18, so I'm figuring it will be declined because I have yet to hear about a VAC doctor actually agreeing with a Veterans doctor, on either the cause or severity, for the consideration of a disability award/pension, and VAC will always go with the medical opinion that saves them money.
