No wonder they refuse to really go after the federal Government over benefits, because if they lose their funding, their "leadership" will get kick away from the trough.

Re: Royal Canadian Legion / Topics & Posted Articles
Who knew ?
Showing salaries in excess of $100,000 ?
Living expenses ?
Trips to the Caribbean ?
Memberships of about 300,000 only a third of those actually served in the military ?
It's no wonder they wont provide detail accounts of expenses...they are robbing the funds !

Royal Canadian Legion shoots down bid to reveal details about executives salaries and travel’
OTTAWA — An attempt to make Canada’s largest veterans organization reveal details about its executives’ salaries and travel
has been shot down by its senior leadership.
The decision by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command has prompted some of the organization’s long-time members to question the state of accountability in the upper levels of its leadership.
“I believe that the members across the country want to have assurances that the very large amounts of monies required to operate our organization are well spent,” Lorne Tyson, a Legion member from Winnipeg, wrote Jan. 21 to Jack Frost, chairman of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command.
“Rather than have an open discussion about the finances and expenses required to support our executive, we have been denied that opportunity in a very arbitrary manner,” Tyson said.
His letter, which outlines a resolution he and others wanted debated at this summer’s Legion convention, has been circulating among veterans. Others have raised concern about the money the Dominion Command, the Legion’s administrative organization, has spent on travel, including for trips to the Caribbean.
Tyson’s motion requests financial reports be presented to the convention that include a list of all Legion employee positions, by title, showing salaries in excess of $100,000, expenses for each of those positions for travel, entertainment and vehicles, as well as other living expenses.
It also requests to see any expenses paid to employees for accompanying spouses or other family members and a list of all out-of-country travel for employees.
But Steven Clark, director of administration for the Legion’s Dominion Command, said expenses are being tightly controlled after members raised concerns in 2014. “We want to make sure that our members do have that confidence the contributions they are making for the running of the organization are being used for the intended purposes,” he said in an interview. “There’s even stricter control over the expenses we have as an organization.”
The Legion’s lawyers examined Tyson’s resolution, which had been approved by the Legion’s provincial command in Manitoba, but concluded some of it would violate privacy laws. Because of that the entire resolution was dismissed before it could even be considered at the convention.
Tyson has been informed it cannot be discussed or even raised at the convention this summer in Newfoundland.
The Royal Canadian Legion is Canada’s largest veteran organization. It has more than 300,000 members in branches exceeding 1,400 across the country. Members pay an annual fee of about $50, part of which goes to fund the Dominion Command’s $10-million budget.
But falling membership has hurt Legion finances. Membership, which was once 600,000, has declined to the 300,000 and only about a third of those have actually served in the military.
Tyson declined to provide a comment to Postmedia.
But in his email to Frost, he blasted the actions of Dominion Command to shut down debate.
“Instead of transparency, we have more secrecy, and instead of accountability, we are told that there will be no accountability,” Tyson wrote.
Clark said overall salaries and travel expenses are included in Legion reports and online, but they are not broken down.
“We haven’t gone to disclosing the salaries of individuals because of privacy reasons,” Clark said. “Because we are not a federally or publicly funded organization there is no statute that requires us to have disclosure laws.”
But he said that the Legion is open and transparent.
Tyson’s resolution notes that member branches contributing money to the central organization “have expressed great concern regarding the expenses of Dominion Command at recent conventions.”
Instead of transparency, we have more secrecy, and instead of accountability, we are told that there will be no accountability
“This resolution was intended to give all of us as members a true idea of how some of our per capita is spent,” Tyson added.
“Your actions have disheartened me as no other issue in the Legion ever has,” Tyson wrote Frost. “I fear for the future of this organization unless we return to an inclusive and democratic standard of governance, as we should have.”
The Legion has cut hospitality and travel budgets in an attempt to get finances in order.
But Legion officials have acknowledged there are trust issues.
“We have a crisis in finance,” Ontario Command president Bruce Julian told Legion Magazine last year, “but we also have a crisis in confidence between Dominion Command and our members.”

Re: Royal Canadian Legion / Topics & Posted Articles
Antiquated notions of eras long gone article struck me as a pretty long overdue rant and apology. Quoting that article..." Unfortunately, veterans eat veterans, we do it to ourselves so don't blame the Legion for antiquated notions of eras long gone. "
Don't know this author, but he's a real good one.
So... the Legion ain't antiquated? A Service Officer helped me a lot once upon a time.
.... but I don't have to be a MEMBER of jack shyte period to be helped by them.
That's more modern than antiquated,
Was General Haig mentioned in that article somewhere?
