The Region of Peel has started to erect road signs that honour Canada’s Armed Forces veterans.

The commemorative signage is being installed along Dixie Road in Mississauga, from Lakeshore Road all the way north through Brampton and continues into Caledon.

Last year, Peel regional council decided it wanted to pay tribute to veterans by memorializing a major thoroughfare.

It was decided that Dixie Road would be designated as the Veterans Memorial Roadway to recognize and preserve the memory, achievements and sacrifices of those who have served and are currently serving Canada.

The road names are not being changed, but dozens of commemorative signs will line the approximate 38-km length of Dixie Road.

Where the roadway turns into Horseshoe Hill Road, in Caledon, the town has agreed to continue the signage another 16 km to continue the roadway designation to the end of Peel at Hwy. 9.

A red poppy and the words Veterans Memorial Roadway, We Will Remember Them are printed on the blue road signs.

“I am pleased that The Region of Peel has commemorated Dixie Road as Veterans Memorial Roadway to honour the bravery and sacrifice our veterans have made for our freedom and defending our way of life,” Peel Region Chair Frank Dale said in a written statement.

The roadway designation was made with the support and assistance of local Royal Canadian Legion branches.

Local legions worked with the region to select the road, the commemorative wording and design the signs.

The legion chose Dixie Road for a number of reasons, including the roadway’s historical proximity to local legions, armories, and a former site used as a military firing range.

The poppy, when used as a symbol of remembrance in Canada, is a registered trademark of Dominion Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and is used with permission from Dominion Command.

“On behalf of District B of the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command and all its members, I would like to thank the Region of Peel and the municipal governments involved in honouring our veterans with this Veterans Memorial Roadway,” said Jack Porter, District B Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command.

All signs are expected to be up in a few weeks. The project cost is estimated at $25,000.
