RCMP suicide rates from March 1960 to March 1983 Empty RCMP suicide rates from March 1960 to March 1983

What are the statistics from 1995 to present since the Liberal and Conservative government  budget cutbacks, increase workload,  increase of UN, NATO deployments placed upon the RCMP officers?? Are these previous statistic reliable?  I challenge Commissioner Paulson to state that suicide of RCMP officers is not a real big problem i.e. acceptable losses. In reality one suicide is to many but does Mr. Harper  believe in acceptable losses within the RCMP so he can carry on with filling the government coffers with money to play with down the road, for example giving the Thailand National Police 12 million Canadian Tax dollars to curb illegal people smuggling.

Four Million will fund the Occupational Stress Injury Social Support program for for the RCMP for 2 to 4  years. If the New York Police Department had realized that their was a high rate of suicide cases within their ranks and secure funding from the City of New York for a mirror program to OSISS (POPPA) and cut their suicide rate by 80 percent I ask what is the malfunction with the Conservative Government?  The answer is simple, saving tax money rather than invest in the health and well being of the of this countries national police force's officers. The RCMP a National Symbol that has been forsaken because of the indifference of a bean counter that only sees black and red not human beings putting their lives on the line both here and abroad to maintain the Canadian way of life.  I am sure Mr. Harper's very nice fat gold plated federal pension means a lot because he earned it? What has the RCMP done to Mr. Harper and his government  to deserve this indifference???? Is there a personal aspect to all this?

RCMP GAZETTE, Vol. 59, No. 5, 1997

Menton (1984) compiled statistics on RCMP suicide rates from March 1960 to March 1983.  The data from the Menton (1984) study and this study were combined to determine a "typical" profile of a member who committed suicide.  This combination provided 64 cases, although there were missing data for some.  While there was no typical profile in terms of stressors, certain demographic features would apply to most suicides.  A typical RCMP member who committed suicide was 20 to 39 years old (73.4%), was a constable or corporal (71.9%), committed suicide by using a firearm (88.3%) usually the service revolver, was male (95.3%), and was off duty at the time (81.0%). [Page 13]

The main focus of this study was the number of RCMP members committing suicide.  Between January 1984 and December 1995, an average of 16.0/100,000 RCMP officers committed suicide, compared to a male general population average of 26.6/100,000. (The Canadian general population statistics for men were used for comparison because most RCMP members are male).  Hence, RCMP members were less likely than members of the general population to commit suicide.  These recent figures are similar to the 14.1/100,000 rate determined by Menton (1984) for RCMP suicides and represent about 60% of the rate found in the general population.
