For those that don't want a hold on their cheque when they go to cash it, you can asked your bank teller to call and verify the cheque, most banks will do this for you, and once they verify it, you will have access to the funds Immediately.

That means most banks will hold the cheque for 5 business days , you'd think MC would make it easy, anything that costs them extra forget about it!

Yes pteadams, I hear you when you say the 30% tax withhold would be a burden on you at this time. At least you have the Legal fee deduction to claim for this year, so with the high tax withhold, and being able to claim the Legal fees, you should get a good return next year. Can you say if the cheque you received was certified ?

Taxes withheld on my amount which is under $13,000 is also calculated at 30%.
That is really alot and a burden for me at this time.

If this was in any way a normal lump sum payment, and the government was paying the legal costs, I would be okay with the 30% holdback

MC may have been including their portion, which is deductible for tax purposes at years end in stating 20% for holdback,

As after SISIP's 30%, then MC's 8.025% plus HST for Ontario, the final deduction is in excess of 40% taken for claimable tax purposes,

So the 30% may have been okay if not taking legal into account,

but as the governments representative, and following the tax rules explicitly, the extra 10% is a savings until next calendar year,

It would have been good for them to include the legal and fee's in calculating the holdback amount
