I just spoke to my cousin and she's asking me to thank you for caring. Here is what she wrote: 
ahhh that is nice to say,  tell them I said Im just concerned about the human race in general.

She and her husband have a very caring soul.

WoV ~ so very kind and selfless of you and your family and friends to open your homes to people in need. This is the definition of  what true heroism is ~ stay safe and well. I am sure you will make a difference in someone's life and for that I commend you.

Thanks Zero Sum. Things are much better now that's for sure. I just wanted to add how that there's so many more vets out there who were or are still in a bad way much the same as we were back then. I just wanted to remind those vets to keep fighting and never give up the fight until you're satisfied you're getting exactly what you're entitled to!

It does get better, BUT charity begins at home and specifically to those who have NOTHING! Let's take care of those who have fallen through the cracks rather than being guilt trip'd into giving someone a cash donation.

Sorry folks, I actually had a great post ready in my head but as I started typing it above, my ADHD must've kicked in, or I spotted something shiny on the floor and got all distracted and now can't remember what the hell I wanted to say!

As Tony Soprano (RIP) would say "Fuggetabouddit!" But, i got to chime in afterall .... 

I declared personal bankruptcy when I was continually being denied a VAC pension!
I applied for Welfare and was denied benefits!
My wife and I pawned a shit load of stuff so we could buy formula and diapers for the baby!
My wife and I called relatives feeling shameful because we had to borrow money!
We rolled up loose change to buy groceries and what not!

Today we're doing a hell of  lot better financially but we went through hell and back during those lean times! There are veterans TODAY who are in the boat we were in whom could use a little cash advance!

We appreciate what has been done in reference to the Class Action Lawsuit but it's not like it's free or found money we're all waiting on. It's money that was rightfully and legally stolen from us to begin with.

No problem. Unfortunately, there are too many people who may use this kind of info for nefarious reasons, and I wouldn't want to see someone generous enough to open their home to strangers, be taken advantage of.

DM does deserve recognition for what he's brought forward to MC, and his perseverance...perhaps some sort of formal recognition through VAC for his efforts toward veteran's rights, but truthfully, there are a lot more people out there far deserving of a financial leg-up...veterans who can't fight anymore, who've lost the will along with so much more and who don't have such a strong support mechanism at home...plus, there are many more who won't be getting nearly as much from MC as he has. 

I think it's fair to say that his recognition came in the form of a $50,000 honorarium...that's not a "thank you" that anyone would turn away. I know of a lot of vets who've sold everything to feed their kids, gone bankrupt...so there are plenty of real needy families out there. 

He has done quite a bit to bring this situation into the forefront, but that wouldn't justify calling him a "true hero"...I think that's anyone who's worn the uniform and served their country faithfully, and made the sacrifices that keep us free...that in my book is a true hero.
