Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
Trooper - Tks again for clearing things up for me. Sometimes there is just too much crap put out there. I just passed the 100% mark, and got 66% of that since 2006. Not a thing to be proud of, but its life. Like alot of us on here, where mostly all proud of our service, even though we came out the other end fracked for life. If we were not cranky old, busted up farts, we would be back in the green. I fought the system for yrs for every %, so I don't feel bad. Tks. VVV...

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
Johnny they are still going to give back pay retro to all those who received a previous lump sum.
What has happen is VAC has published an example on their website stating that if a Veteran previously received a 25% award his or her retro would be $11000.
So myself an K9 contacted VAC to question the example that was published , the agent was going to take it up the chain of command to ask for a more precise example , they did not change the example so for all we know the percentage of retro is set at a set rate of percentage.
Until we hear more on this we will have to go by what was published in the example provided by VAC.

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
Hi everyone, I'm new here but I've been following the board with interest for a while now. My take on the numbers as published on the VAC site are as follows:
Present 100% = 310k approx.
VAC will calculate the COL Increase for 2017 +\- 2%
2017 100% = 316k approx
If they then increase to 360k as promised the differential will be only 44k, resulting in a 25% = 11k as published in the example.
So no back pay, and by leaving it till April 1 they have minimized the payout and made the 360k promised take place as late as possible.

Disability Award Increased for Veterans
Background
The Disability Award provides injured Canadian Armed Forces members or Veterans with tax-free financial support for an injury or illness resulting from military service. The Disability Award is paid in recognition of the non-economic effects, including pain and suffering, of service-related disabilities on the lives of Canadian Armed Forces members and Veterans.
Veterans Affairs Canada is committed, through Budget 2016, to a proposed increase to the maximum value of the Disability Award lump-sum amount.
Quick Facts
Budget 2016 reaffirmed the Government’s intent to support the long-term financial security of ill and injured Veterans.
It is proposed that the maximum Disability Award be increased from $310,378 to $360,000 on April 1, 2017. In addition, Death and Detention Benefit amounts would also be increased accordingly.
If passed, the increase the Disability Award and the Death Benefit would also mean that Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans and survivors who have already received a Disability Award and/or a Death Benefit under the New Veterans Charter would benefit from the new rate and receive a supplementary payment.
For example, after the changes come into effect on April 1, 2017, a Veteran who has already received a Disability Award for a 25% disability assessment will receive a payment of $11,000 as a result of the increase.
The monetary value of a Veteran’s disability benefit is based on an assessment of his or her disability. The two factors that determine the assessment are the level of medical impairment resulting from an illness/injury and the resulting impact on the individual’s quality of life. While the degree of a Veteran’s disability is measured in one percent increments, disability benefits are paid in in 5% increments accordance with legislation.
The proposed maximum Disability Award lump-sum amount would be comparable to or greater than similar non-economic compensation amounts payable in Canada under private and public sectors insurance plans, by the Workers’ Compensation Board or as non-pecuniary damages awarded by Canadian courts.
If passed, changes to the Disability Award will come into effect April 1, 2017.

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
With regards to the increase in the disability award and the example given by VAC on the supplementary payment for those who have received awards from 2006 on.
VAC has been contacted on their online example ; "For example, after the changes come into effect on April 1, 2017, a Veteran who has already received a Disability Award for a 25% disability assessment will receive a payment of $11,000 as a result of the increase."
Clarification ? More details ? Does the 25% mean a flat rate of $11000 ? Does the rate reflect for all years? Does the rate in terms of percentage remain the same in terms of each percentage starting from 5% up?
These are the questions that were asked and the representative did indeed acknowledge that the numbers did not match the example as per our figures of $12405.5 for the 25% retro payment.
The representative is now taking this up the chain of command and requesting a clearer example be given.
I will keep my eyes open for any change , if any to this example.

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
I don't get them all because I missed out on PA, and I am going to fight for my PIAS, but with the increase of ELB... I will be making a lot more than my prerelease salary. Granted I would prefer to not be injured but at least I am taken care of by my wife.
$3736/$4982 SISIP LTD/ELB 75% Gross
$3986/$4982 VIP
$5170/$4982 PIA Level 2 Gross
$5780/$4982 FCRB
$6868/$4982 PIAS Gross
$7468/$4982 SISIP LTD/ELB +15%
$7718/$4982 DTC
I don't have all of these but I currently make more per month than I did while employed. If I had each benefit I would be literally banking 3k a month. It's insane really.

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
I wish they would pay everyone up to the new amount for their disability percentage. So everyone at a certain percentage, will have been paid the exact same amount of money. But the wording of the legislation eliminates that possibility. Basically, they do not want to pay any COLA for years after the lump sum was paid. So the easiest, and fairest, way of doing that is to figure out what amount that COLA would have been applied to. If they simply subtract the COLA from the known amount, the payouts will be smaller, by several hundred dollars.
existing 25% rates--------Prorated 25% rates
2006 - $62500--------------$72500
2007 - $63932.31---------$74161.48
2008 - $65210.96---------$75644.71
2009 - $66841.23---------$77535.83
2010 - $69019.92---------$80063.10
2011 - $71329.86---------$82742.64
2012 - $73327.09---------$85059.43
2013 - $74646.98---------$86590.50
2014 - $75318.80---------$87369.81
2015 - $76674.54---------$88942.47
2016 - $77594.64---------$90009.77
So the top up could range between $10000, and $12400, for a 25% award, depending on the year, or years, you received your original payments.

Re: Increased Disability Award & Retro
VRI. I'm really good with numbers, and I can understand why you are coming up with these reduction numbers, but they do not correspond with the example they provided.
We've already said that the difference between a 2016 25% award, and the new amount will be $12406. Using your calculations, a 25% award in 2006, was $62500. The current amount is $77594, for a difference of $15094. So subtract that from $90000, (the new 25% amount), and you get $74906. So the top up in your scenario would still be $12406 ($74906-$62500 = $12406). That is $1400 more than the example.
let's look at at 25% award in 2012. $77594 (2016) - $71329 (2012) = $6265. $90000 (2017) - $6265 = $83735. $83735 - $71594 = a top up of $12141. Once again over $1000 more than the example.
I wish that everyone gets as much as possible, especially if my fears about being excluded for the new pension come to fruition. But I would rather low ball the expected payout, and be pleasantly surprised if it's higher, than over calculate, and get people's hopes and expectations up.
