Re: PIA
Good firebird. My wife was present for all my meetings and had a clearer picture of how I was doing. Being a "tough" person, we don't want to show weakness to those we don't trust or know. We become quite stoic and that is a problem when asking for help. Think of all things that complicate your existence and have become barriers to living a happy life. The word "barriers" is what they want to hear. Whether you have physical mobility problems or suffer extreme anxiety, these are barriers. I jot down notes to prepare for the meeting, because you can get off topic quickly!!

Re: PIA
Good luck to you firebird. Be frank, straightforward and honest. Pia can be evaluated for physical and psychological reasons. If you have a partner, they can be very helpful adding things that you do not or even different perspectives.

I need to take an amount of drugs to make me comatose to prevent me from killing someone and I refuse to live in that frame of mind.

Re: PIA
If I took the drugs that were prescribed to me, at the level prescribed, I would be no better than an extra on the Walking Dead. I take the pain meds ONLY when absolutely necessary, so that I don't end up bed ridden for days. But Veterans shouldn't looked down upon for that decision. I might understand if the drugs were to cure a certain condition, but for the most part, they are only intended to mask the symptoms, and can sometimes cause worse side effects that what you were taking the pills for.

Re: PIA
Here is the reason for my PIA denial (April 2014).
" Specifically, the evidence does not establish that you permanently require the supervision and/or the physical assistance of another person for most aspects of your activities of daily living "
The medical questionaire for TPI for which I was approved " indicates that you have minimal difficulty in your capacity for self care. "
And " ...we found no available Occupational Therapy Assessment or Nursing Assessment to provide detailed objective observations regarding your activities for daily living "
I detailed ALL my info to the OVO as an fyi because he spoke of some vets falling through the pia cracks. His office actually called me to say I would definitely get it on appeal. After that for starters, my ADL mainstay (spouse) left.
Well, I'm still getting my paperwork ducks in a row for reapplying a year and half later but it takes time you know? Huey, Dewey, and Louie... left to right, RE-SIZE!!!!
Here's an older vac news release link on relaxed pia eligibilty to boot.

Anyone know if that is actually in place or got implemented? Besides the pretty words.pinger.
