First of all, does he want help? If he needs help, and you feel that he is not in the right frame of mind, try reaching out to his wife. I know they're estranged, but if they are still legally married, she can contact the police and they can order a psych assessment. I know this isn't ideal, but this way it gets mental health services involved much faster than waiting for a referral from a family doctor. You can also contact VAC and find out if there are any recognized peer groups in his area that you can point him to.
