Re: Legal Fees (Assorted Topics)
I think a more accurate picture of tax rates should also include your provincial percentage too.

Re: Legal Fees (Assorted Topics)
I know the deal may not be good for some. But I think that the deal is probably good for the majority. And I certainly respect everyone's opinions. - we all have our own based on our own situation.
Of course, I would like the govt to pay the legal fees but I think that is just not going to happen. So we must be thankful for what Dennis and the legal team achieved. Remember, before this, SISIP was deducting our VAC payments. Now, they can't.
As for taxes, we all have to pay that anyways. I note that federal tax rates in Canada for 2012 are 15% your first $42707. Then anything earned after your $42707 until $85414 is taxed at 22%. Then anything earned after $85414 to $132406 is 26% and whatever you earn over and above $132306 is taxed at 29%
We all hate paying taxes and if we can't get get each year adjusted then some will pay more in taxes than they would have had they received the income in the proper year.
But I am thankful I do not live in Greece. They have just announced that anyone earning the amount of about USD 56,000 must pay a whopping 42% in taxes.
And for anyone wanting to use a free tax software ( u can donate to them if u want....but only if u want) go to www.studiotax.com ( **And as a disclaimer - I use their software only and am NOT associated with them in any other way.) CCRA actually had studiotax.com recommended last year on their website.

Re: Legal Fees (Assorted Topics)
I must admit one thing here to the class. I have been waiting for this deal since July of 1990. I stand to get alot back in Retro, but in the same breath I do pay alot. My fees are over 110000 alone, and my taxes are over 230000. So I walk away with about half. Is it perfect? No. Is it acceptable? In my case yes. Knowing that there is some relief coming for me, makes me happy with the law firm. Happy with the deal. I am really buggered up and this cash will help me get a hot tub and therapy that VAC will no longer cover as I am NOT GETTING BETTER! If we find something we can do as individuals, then we can pursue that. But I ask my brothers and sisters to please consider that we may lose our offer and get nothing. I am not willing to take that risk. Thanks for listening.

The judge can't order the defendant to pay anything, he can only approve or reject the deal in its whole, playing with fire!

Taxes vs Legal fees
All the chatter about taxes has my head spinning and I for one feel that there is nothing we can do about the tax issue that we all face. That being said. The one thing that I feel we can do is ask the Judge to have the defendant (GOC) pay the legal fees that we are faced with, thus putting more funds into our hands and not the tax mans. Food for thought.

Re: Legal Fees (Assorted Topics)
Redfisher...what I can say about the DTC form is have a detailed letter drawn up for your doctor stating what conditions you have and how your disability affects your daily life(hard to write but you must). You can also apply for the Cumulative Effect of Disability, which adds up many disabilities that may not qualify, to create a scenario of one large disability. Good luck on this. It lasts for 5 tax years if approved. Be prepared. Let your doc know all.

Re: Legal Fees (Assorted Topics)
Yes I agree but before the fat lady sings I want to know what's in the details. Waiting another month or more before we get our individual worksheets is just more unnesessary anxiety.
I think that if we went to an accountant that they might find some loopholes where we get some money back to cover the lawyer fees. Yet I don't, at this time, want to throw a hell of alot of money into RDSP or RRSPs just to get a few dollars back. There has to be a better way. The real kicker is that SISIP is only taking off 20% of the retro and unless we do some finangling of our taxes we will be at a slight loss.
Now I just have to get my doctor to sign off on the Disability credit. Even though I have all the paperwork, have not been able to work since 2006, I am still worried that the doctor will look at me and not fill in the Disability forms. OR he does and CRA will deny it anyway. So much fun! Being 75% VAC disabled, verified Disabled by SISIP and my psychiatrist says I am unable to work...I just hope I can get this credit.

If we opt out of this class action suit do we still pay legal fees?

As I understand it
People not in the class action have been sent letters from sisip telling them of wrong doing on their behalf and should soon receive info on their rights against them
Is this true any word

I read your optimism and like you things have been straight forward and easy for some of us.I think you and I are two of the fortunate ones that the system seemingly worked...But for a lot of people here it hasn't and its been a total sham. Please be more thoughtful in your approach and stop slamming this forum! The complete Veteran voice info site is not just this chat feature it also is full of information and support.
