ya VRI I tend to disagree somewhat . I see they want to roughly mirror the tort maximum for 100% year for year. here is the thing though they will still be required to pay COLA on AT LEAST any amount not paid in the year you received your award till the time it is paid . that extra wording looks more like COLA recovery than anything else .

Probably not. That's what we all thought would happen at first (subtract the total you got from $360,000, and that's your total) but the wording on the actual law suggests it's not going to work like that. And I'd forget about interest.

Most signs to my reading appear as if the max you can get is about $50,000, and that would be for 100%. You can fibd out your rough total using that as your guide (I.e. 50% about $25,000. 25% about $12,000 etc).

The year it was received shouldn't matter since the wording on the bill suggests they won't include annual cost of living increases or interest.

Super, your post was not deleted, I moved and merged your post to this topic, you can view your post on page 15 of this topic. I do this often to keep the forum topics in one topic to make it easier for guest and members to navigate topics. It's not a problem, I move and merge my own topics often, so please continue to post where you want, I can move them without any problems. For future reference if your post is not where you posted it, you will find it elsewhere on the forum, look for key wording from your post to help you find where it was moved, in this particular case the wording is ( lump sum increase )

Seems my earlier post was deleted. If a vet has gotten $279,000 at 100% would it not make sense the vet should get the difference of $360,000-$279,000 plus intersst?

The simplest way for the Feds to solve this problem is to forget the idea of a top-up and award anyone who has received a DA under the NVC, a monthly pension that is the same as the Pension Act. Problem solved.

That is one of the questions I asked, what about the year the Veteran received the award? Another question I asked was is the example a flat rate given to the Veteran regardless when they received the award OR awards? They said they would look into all my questions and if the answers contradicted the example provided, they would look into changing the example. I agree the further back the award OR awards, the bigger the supplementary payment. However, my questions could not be answered, and no changes were made, and no further info has come out of VAC explaining exactly how the calculations would be done. That is why I say at this time we only have the example to go by, anything else is pure speculation.

The example they give is useless unless they give the year the soldier in question got their initial award.

If they got their 25% award in 2015 and then get $11,000 top up, that is a very different implication then if they got their 25% award in 2008 and then get $11,000 top up.

The $11,000 at 25% was an example given by VAC, here is the example ; "Budget 2016 reaffirmed the Government’s intent to support the long-term financial security of ill and injured Veterans.

The maximum Disability Award will be increased from $310,378 to $360,000 on April 1, 2017. In addition, Death and Detention Benefit amounts will also be increased accordingly.

The increase to the Disability Award and the Death Benefit will also mean that Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans and survivors who have already received a Disability Award and/or a Death Benefit under the New Veterans Charter will benefit from the new rate and receive a supplementary payment.

For example, after the changes come into effect on April 1, 2017, a Veteran who has already received a Disability Award for a 25% disability assessment will receive a payment of $11,000 as a result of the increase." http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/about-us/department-officials/minister/budget/disability-award

Just to add to this myself and another CSAT member contacted VAC asking them to explain the example in greater detail, the VAC member stated that they will look into it and if the example needed changes, they would change it. As you can see the example has not changed, so until someone from VAC comes out to clarify exactly what is meant by the example, we have no other choice but to go by that particular example. Further to this, they don't specify a top up, they say that Veterans under the New Veterans Charter will benefit from the new rate and receive a supplementary payment. I don't want to sound negative towards the supplementary payment, but without clearer calculation methods that they are going to use, I'm not going to hold my breath in thinking that the supplementary payments are going to be an amount different from what was provided in this particular example. It's very hard to get a straight answer from those in charge of calculating the disability award retro, there is a reason why more info is not provided, this is never a good sign.

Increased Disability Award & Retro - Page 42 Empty I don't get it

Post by Ex Member Sat 10 Sep 2016, 15:38

Many have spoke about the lump sum increase and the April effective date. They've been saying the $360,000 vets won't get that. And that for every 25% $11,000 will be awarded. What if a veteran is 100% and awarded a total of $279,000, shouldn't that vet get to $360,000 leaving the vet $81,000? I am sorry I'm new and I really don't get it. If they said they're increasing it to that number and a vets 100% they should just get the top up to $360,000 from whatever they got before?

I wonder if the money will come before the paperwork like it always does, leaving us to wonder how the calculations and decisions were made.

Well, I usually expect the worse or in our case the least.  So, when it does get here it will be a surprise.
